The Great Trek resulted from the culmination of tensions between rural descendants of the Cape's original European settlers, known collectively as Boers, and the British Empire. It was also reflective of an increasingly common trend among individual Boer communities to pursue an isolationist and semi-nomadic lifestyle away from the developing administrative complexities in Cape Town. Boers who took part in the Great Trek identified themselves as voortrekkers, meaning "pioneers", "pathfinders" in Dutch and Afrikaans. The Great Trek led directly to the founding of several autonomous Boer republics, namely the South African Republic (also known simply as the Transvaal), the Orange Free State, and the Natalia Republic. It was also responsible for the displacement of the Northern Ndebele people, and was one of several decisive factors influencing the decline and collapse of the Zulu Kingdom" (wikipedia) Title: The Great Trek Author Name: Ransford, Oliver Edition: First Edition ISBN Number: 0719526256 ISBN-13: 9780719526251 Location Published: London, John Murray (Publishers) Ltd.: 1972 Binding: Hardcover Book Condition: Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Item: 1.00 lb Categories: Africa, Africa Seller ID: 20392 Keywords: great trek transvaal zulus boers afrikaans south africa
